AIRPORT SITES
COASTAL AIRPORT
Hazard mitigation study for greenfield airport site at vulnerable river delta:
1/ comparison of base maps,: divergent land vs water coverage
2/ evolution of site over 20 years: increasingly aquatic due to land subsidence
3/ survey of hazards (left to right): flooding, storm surge, sea level rise; seismic, soil liquefaction, tsunami
4/ survey of existing settlements: fishing villages, waterway transport
5/ synthetic map: site boundaries, settlements, river system, tidal levels...
6/ hazard mitigation strategies:

6/ hazard mitigation strategies:
- site perimeter: storm surge protection by mangrove plantations: residual mangroves at existing site (above left), plantation concept by SOM (below left)
- site interior: flooding protection by basin & dike infrastructure: fish ponds at existing site (above right); basins and roadways at Channel Tunnel - Calais by Paul Andreu-ADP (below right)
RUNWAY LANDSCAPE
Landscape concept for new runway project in floodplain. Objectives: reforestation for CO2 sequestration and riparian corridor with bike path; stormwater management
1/ runway plan
2/ runway plan with vegetation zoning
3/ vegetation zoning zoom with section: height gradation per OLS, with margin of safety for mature height of trees
• Prairie: within RWY strip and beginning of transition surface; only frangible herbaceous plants (grasses); ‘fauche tardive’ allows plants to flower and produce seed; close mowing around navaids and AGL
• Shrubland: 5 to 12m height
• Low Forest: 12 to 20m height
• Tall Riparian Forest: above 20m height, with clearway for airport boundary
4/ Vegetation: native grassy weeds and forest species suitable for alluvial soils and for restoring wasteland
